UMH Secures €149,600 to Strengthen Its Leadership in European and International Projects

UMH Secures €149,600 to Strengthen Its Leadership in European and International Projects

Improving the attraction of European funding for scientific research, knowledge transfer, and researcher mobility is one of the main objectives of the strategic internationalization project of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH). To this end, the university has secured funding of €149,600 from the 2024–2027 State Plan for Scientific, Technical and Innovation Research.

This grant will make it possible to strengthen UMH’s internal structures in order to increase its participation and leadership in the European Union’s Framework Programme, Horizon Europe, and other international programs. The funds will be implemented between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2027, and are aimed at enhancing the institution’s competitiveness in attracting European funding.

This milestone forms part of UMH’s well-established track record in securing European and international research funding, as well as its leadership in highly competitive project calls.

The funding will be primarily allocated to hiring specialized technical staff within the International Research Projects Area of the Research Management Service, which reports to the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Knowledge Transfer. This reinforcement will make it possible to intensify support for UMH’s research staff—comprising 1,270 lecturers and researchers—particularly in projects in which the university can act as the coordinating institution.

Currently, this service provides support in identifying calls for proposals, preparing applications, administrative coordination, and advising on intellectual property and international consortia. The new funding will allow these strategic functions to be expanded and consolidated.

Thanks to this boost, UMH will have more tools to promote and manage international projects and will be able to facilitate the integration, consolidation, and leadership of its research staff within the global scientific arena.

The State Plan call, managed by the State Research Agency of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, pursues a dual objective: on the one hand, to increase Spain’s economic return through greater R&D&I funding from the European Union and other international bodies; on the other, to strengthen the leadership of Spanish institutions within the European and international research ecosystem.

For UMH, this funding reinforces an internationalization trajectory that began with the Fifth Framework Programme and was consolidated in its 2022–2025 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes increasing the international impact of research through specialized structures.

UMH’s internationalization strategy focuses, among other aspects, on promoting coordinated projects and increasing institutional visibility; encouraging participation in highly competitive calls such as the European Research Council (ERC), the European Innovation Council (EIC), and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA); fostering the involvement of emerging profiles with leadership potential; and creating favorable structural conditions for attracting and retaining international talent.

The European Commission endorses the UMH plan for the recruitment of research staff and renews its HRS4R quality seal

The Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche has received the approval of the European Commission for its implementation of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the recruitment of scientific personnel. These commitments ensure an attractive research career and improve the recruitment and working conditions of researchers in Europe. The European Commission awarded the Seal of Excellence in Human Resources for Research (HRS4R) to the UMH in 2019, a distinction that has been renewed this year.

The UMH obtains the EU’s HR Excellence in Research Award

The European Comission has awarded the UMH of Elche the HR Excellence in Research Award, thus becoming the second academic institution of the Valencian Community to achieve this distinction, after the University of Valencia.

This award lends official recognition to the commitment of the UMH to the most demanding levels of quality in all the processes linked to the recruitment, working conditions, training, management and responsibility of the research staff in any type of contractual relation, as well as the entity’s commitment to maintain and improve these levels of quality in the future.

The objective of the HR Excellence in Research Award is to promote and improve recruiting, working conditions and research careers, thus contributing to the development of the European Research Area.

SELF-ANALYSIS: GAP ANALYSIS & ACTION PLAN

This work has been completed thanks to the high number of staff members who participated at the 4 UMH campuses, who have at all times provided facilities and a strong spirit of collaboration.

It is worth highlighting the sense of enthusiasm and motivation that has been present in all the in-person meetings (Focus Groups), both on behalf of researchers of all profiles, R1, R2, R3 and R4, as well as the administrative and services staff and management staff of the UMH.

To believe in the HRS4R Project is the best way to prove that the proposed Action Plan will be applied and completed, as it has been an effort by many people who dedicate themselves to the continuous improvement of the UMH.

Mr. Manuel Jordán

Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation,

Implementation of the HRS4R Human Resources Strategy for Researchers

In Elche, on 8 November 2017, the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation notifies all those institutionally involved in this process of the approval, on behalf of the Governing Board of the UMH, of the beginning of the process to implement the HRS4R Human Resources Strategy for Researchers, and of the establishment of an HRS4R Executive Committee and an HRS4R Work Committee, to ensure the appropriate development and implementation of this project in the UMH.

The HRS4R Human Resources Strategy for Researchers is a self-assessment and external assessment process which concludes with the recognition of the UMH institution after submitting an appropriate Action Plan to improve its Human Resource policies in alignment with the charter and code of the European Commission. It is an acknowledgement of the continuous improvement of the UMH.
